The number of national passengers who arrived to Chetumal by air during January and February 2018, increased by 45%, while the number of foreigners plummeted 87.5%, according to statistics from Airports and Auxiliary Services (ASA).

The report of the agency that manages the Chetumal International Airport states that in the first two months of this year, a total of 51,055 people arrived to Chetumal’s air terminal, which represents 15,994 more than the same period last year.

However, regarding international passengers, the number went from 88 in 2017 to only 11 in January and February of this year.

The figures include Regular Commercial Aviation, Charter Flights, Air Taxis and General Aviation.

Last week, the company Viva Aerobus withdrew its operations from the Chetumal International Airport, joining the company Tropical Air (connection with Belize) that also stopped providing the service last year.

In this regard, Alberto García Magaña, administrator of ASA in the state capital, said that there are conversations with some companies interested in occupying the spaces left by the two air carriers.

“Negotiations are ongoing with another airline. They could be the same ones that are currently operating, or others may come. AeroMéxico operated here and that could be reactivated, also Aeromar, that could be adding a regional flight,” he said.

He pointed out that the withdrawal of Viva Aerobus has not caused any major impact on the occupation of flights nor has left people without the possibility to travel to the central part of the country.

“The airport is operating normally. But depending on the demand, we’ll see how the remaining places can be occupied,” he said.

In the case of Tropic Air, he said that negotiations are also taking place, with the intention of reactivating not only the Chetumal-San Pedro connection, but flights to other cities as well.
