The website The Province posted and article about how tourists are once again returning to Mexico’s popular east coast playground of Playa del Carmen, now that Canada and the U.S. have lifted their travel advisories:

Steeped in history and infused with Maya culture, the vibrant Playa del Carmen has been described as the heart of Mexico’s Riviera Maya.

Flowing south from Cancun to Tulum on the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, the Riviera Maya is well known for having swaths of beautiful beaches and jungle expanses, but it is also home to the second largest reef in the world and the largest explored underground river system on the planet.

So, if stellar diving and snorkeling experiences appeal, whether on offshore reefs or inland in cenotes (giant sink holes) and caverns that showcase stalactites and stalagmites formed over millions of years, this is definitely the place for you.

The adventure begins at the Sac-Actun system, the world’s longest underground river, recommended by the specialized cave divers of National Geographic Snorkeler.
