The emerald hummingbird (Chlorostilbon forficatus), is the bird considered “The Jewel of Cozumel”, since it is only found on the island, and although it is very similar to other hummingbirds, its emerald green color differentiates it from the rest and makes it something very special for nature lovers, bird watchers and experts, explained biologist Rafael Chacón Díaz, director of CEA.

Chacón Díaz said that we are in the middle in the nesting season for this bird, and it is common for them to make their nests in the gardens or courtyards of homes, parks or other public places. Therefore, their eggs are exposed, so it is important to call to the Direction of Conservation and Environmental Education of the FPMC so that they can go and check that the nest and the birds are in good condition. Just call 85 7 12 52 or 85 7 28 14, or send a message via whatsapp to 987 87 39853.

The biologist explained that CEA staff will go to review the conditions in which the nests are, in order to increase the chances of hatching and continue to protect this bird that barely reaches nine centimeters long and has an emerald particularly beautiful green color that has earned it the name of “La Joya de Cozumel” (The Jewel of Cozumel), as it looks lke an emerald.

“If we all join and collaborate in environmental conservation actions, we will make a difference for the benefit of the community in general,” Chacón Díaz concluded.
