The Mexican Trinity of Directors: All About Them

Which is your favorite movie? If you are listing down your top five or top ten movies, we are sure you would have one movie that’s made by the Mexican Trinity of Directors.

Whenever some talks about movies, it is almost certain that the topic of Hollywood would come up. But a country very close to the USA has been making exemplary films that have gone to win multiple awards.

We are talking about Mexico and the three directors who have made headlines with their films. One of the members is Guillermo del Toro who is an artist in crafting out of life stories on the screen.

They are known to create movies of new subjects. They are known to throw life into stories and present them in a way that we thought wasn’t possible. If you don’t believe us, keep reading below!

The Shape of Water

We are sure you have already watched it or it’s a move that is definitely on your to-do watch list. The Shape of Water turned out to be a masterpiece of Toro which won 13 Academy Awards at the beginning of the year. We follow the story of a cleaning woman in America during the 1960s. She cannot speak but falls in love with a humanoid sea creature defying all odds.

The movie had a huge budget of $19.5 million and was quite successful at the box office. Such a movie may not be possible in Hollywood as the script would have put off the producers. But the reality happened in Mexico, and we have a visual and conceptual wonder in front of us.

Del Toro is not the only Mexican director to be credited with so many awards. Nor he is the only one to make unconventional movies- we have Alejandro G. Iñárritu who won the Oscar in 2015 for Birdman.

The movie portrayed the life of an aging superhero who is once again trying to get it going for him. Iñárritu has also won the Oscar in 2016 for The Revenant which starred Leonardo di Caprio. The movie was about revenge which takes the protagonist amidst chilling and snowing lands. Iñárritu has also created other masterpieces which have gone to attain the cult status- Ameros Perros, 21 Grams, Biutiful and Babel.

Alfonso Cuaron Continues to Surprise Us

When we have mentioned about the trinity of filmmakers, we surely cannot miss out the name of Alfonso Cuarón. He picked up a lot of attention for his movie Gravity which came out in 2014.

The science fiction movie was a visual spectacle with extended scenes in the space. Then movie turned out to be a blockbuster and went on to earn $723 million in the global box office. Cuarón also has other inspirational movies under his umbrella, and he also directed a Harry Potter movie. You can also experience his masterwork in case of movies like Children of Men, Y TU Mama Tambien and Pan’s Labyrinth.

The trinity of filmmakers has really made Mexico proud by winning numerous awards and recognition.
